Shall the City pay the survivor of a police officer or firefighter who dies in the line of duty 100% of retirement benefits the officer or firefighter would have received?
The current Charter provides that the survivor receives 100% of the retirement benefits if the police officer or firefighter was hired before 1976. If the police officer or firefighter was hired after 1976, when a Charter amendment reducing employee benefits went into effect, the survivor receives 75% of the retirement benefits. THE PROPOSAL: Proposition E, a Charter amendment, would provide that when a police officer or firefighter dies in the line of duty, his or her survivor receives 100% of the retirement benefits, regardless of when the officer or firefighter was hired.
