An Effective Learning EnvironmentBy Isaiah "Ike" WhiteCandidate for Board Member; Mount Pleasant School District; 4 Year Term | |

Mount Pleasant School District has the infrastructure in place for success. My vision includes additions which will ensure that success for our students. The diversity of the Mount Pleasant Elementary School District student population and surrounding community offers an excellent foundation for establishing a quality learning environment, culturally as well as academically. I have found this diversity to be an asset during my ten-year involvement in the district as a member of the school site councils (Valle Vista, Foothill and August Boeger) and as a member of the district's Parent Advisory Committee. The 1997 UCLA Kindergarten Focus Project was a prime example of how success could be obtained through diverse cultural participation and exchange of ideas. The district has in place an infrastructure for establishing and administering control of the learning environment with tools such as attainable objectives, standards for achievement, administrative policies and procedures, curriculum assessment and evaluation. They also have the dedicated and committed staff and employees needed to support success. To complete the process, without budgetary increases, my vision centers on basic management improvements that recognize the expertise and talent of administrators, staff, parents, and the support that the Mount Pleasant community can provide. This vision includes: · Focusing on the well being of the whole student; socially, emotionally and academically. Tests alone do not determine the students' potential. · Establishing a learning community that will attract and retain highly qualified staff. · Developing an atmosphere of cooperative inclusiveness where staff voices are included in local decision making, especially on classroom matters. · Fostering positive communication pathways between the school, parents, and the community. · Providing constructive and meaningful avenues for addressing student and parent concerns. · Ensuring that our schools, facilities, and students are safe at all times. · Seizing opportunities to access resources throughout the city to achieve a quality student-learning environment. |
