Important issues facing H.B.U.H.S.D.

By Michael H. Simons

Candidate for Board Member; Huntington Beach Union High School District

This information is provided by the candidate
Two of the most important issues facing the school district are Measure C funding and compliance with the "No Child Left Behind" act.
The Huntington Beach Union High School District can be considered as a very large business. It has an annual budget of $125 million, over 1100 employees and 14,500 students. Fiscal accountibility is always an important part of the Board's oversight. Now it is also important to ensure that the $238 millon in Measure C funds, recently approved by the voters, are utilized to their fullest. The community has given the district's current and future students the opportunity to have up-to-date and safe facilities in which to pursue their educational goals. We have just begun a five-year plan that will build new classrooms as well as rennovate and repair existing facilities. The Board needs to be constantly vigilant that the architects, construction managers and contractors stay on task and work efficiently. We also need to enable the Citizens Oversight Committee so that the community is assured that their tax dollars are spent wisely.

The other issue that needs our utmost attention is the "No Child Left Behind" Act. While we have performed very well so far, and continue to exceed our target scores, the act's regulations present ever-increasing target scores. The H.B.U.H.S.D. needs to make sure that all of our teachers are highly qualified and teaching in their correct area of expertise. We must also early identify students having problems and place them in programs that address their needs.
