Here is a short series of communiq'ues establishing my view

Glenn, Ayn Rand is one of my favorite authors, who emphasized individual responsibility and achievement, supposedly one of the distinguishing characteristics of the Republican Party. Ellsworth Toohey was a villain in The Fountainhead, always nipping at the heels of people who could do things, because he could not do anything on his own.

I have read the OC Register for over 25 years, along with the LA Times and the Daily Pilot. I like both major papers. The LA Times editorial policies are more cosmopolitan and compassionate than the Register's, which tend to be arrogant, narrow minded, and selfish, appealing to the more base instincts of people. The LA Times reflects mainstream America, while the Register is a relic of the past.

Tibor Machan's basic premise is wrong. He states:

"In Orange County, renting an apartment can cost what a younger person, new to the marketplace, earns a month. So new houses are a dire human necessity. The more built, the lower the cost, including of apartments, since those who move into homes will ease up the demand. This is elementary economics."

This has not been what has happened in OC. Despite tens of thousands of new units built in the recent past, OC prices have shot up, disproving the theory that the more units built, the less the cost. As I have shown in the past, Orange County is more dense than LA County and is getting denser and denser each year. This increased density will continue to drive the cost of housing up, as well as all infrastructure costs, such as highways, water, sewage, etc. You, your children and grandchildren will be paying the cost of these infrastructure costs.

The challenge is to provide enough open space to preserve other species and maintain human quality of life. Humans don't do well in very dense environments. Violence goes up, stress goes up, health goes down.

Better to leave your children and grandchildren a legacy of peace in the world and enough open space to enjoy and appreciate the natural world. Mankind has done such a poor job of managing its space in the world that other species have gone extinct and are going extinct, not a good reflection of the human race. We can do better.

Jan, you just answered something that has been bothering me. Now I'm not going to look up the density of these places for comparison but London, Paris, Munich, Rome, Palermo, Prague, Budapest, Vienna, and I can name quite a few other places that I'm aware of are quite dense. No lawns, no patios, just a building, usually crowded with more people than we care to live with in a residence. But now I know - from you - what is wrong with socialist Europe. They just don't do very well in dense environments. Especially the Parisians. Glenn

I'll answer that one, for the less faint of heart-

Actually, Humans do quite well in dense environments -TEMPORARILY. Then, the ecosystems they suck the life out of wither, along with all God's splendor at which point the humans follow suit down the drain of selfishness, ignorance and insensitivity. The catch? It doesn't need be that way!
