This is my Official Candidate StatementBy Bruce A. BroadwaterCandidate for Supervisor; County of Orange; Supervisorial District 1 | |

This information appears in your voter handbookMy wife Peggy and I have lived in Orange County for 33 years. We raised our two sons here. It has been a great place to live. It's amazing how much Orange County has changed during that time. It has become a vibrant county with people who dream about the future. Yet it's still home. My local leadership has been about providing opportunity for dreams and aspirations, while preserving Orange County as a good home to raise children. In Garden Grove, where I've been mayor for ten years, we improved the city in every area: new jobs, new hotels, new homes, and a completely new image. At the same time, we enhanced community policing, created a family resource center, and built a new Higher Education Center. We improved Garden Grove's quality of life. We did all this without raising taxes. We did it while Sacramento politicians and bureaucrats kept reaching into city and county treasuries to balance their bloated budgets. We did it by combining independent thinking with strict financial management. I'm proud that Garden Grove was one of only two cities not to be caught in the county bankruptcy. With this hands-on experience, I will tackle the issues that matter to Central Orange County quality of life: The Garden Grove Freeway must be fixed now. It took a lawsuit by Garden Grove to force OCTA to agree to wider underpasses, and we still need to fight for more lanes. Let's stop diverting millions of dollars to CenterLine while our residents suffer on an inadequate freeway. We need a strong advocate for our share of parks, roads and county services. For every dollar we send to Sacramento, we get back only 6 cents, and then most of that money goes to South Orange County. I'll work to fix this imbalance. Your next supervisor must understand local government, not view it as just a waystation to the next political office. I understand neighborhoods. I know you don't put a 37 Floor skyscraper next to a residential community. I stand for common sense in government. I'm no stranger to hard work. For twenty years I ran a small business and had to meet a payroll. I earned my bachelor's degree while working full time. I served my country for three years in the United States Army. I believe in public service. I ask for your vote on November 2. |
