I began teaching English and Physical Education at Calaveras High School in September 1977. I married my husband of 26 years, Ron Mansfield, in August of 1978 and taught one more year at Calaveras High School. We moved to Placerville in 1979 when I was hired at Ponderosa High School, and my husband began his farming business in Apple Hill. While teaching at Ponderosa I coached volleyball, basketball and softball.
I took a year's leave of absence in 1987 to stay home with our daughter (born in 1981) and son (born in 1984). Upon realizing that our family and my husband's business would be better off if I stayed home while helping run the business, I reluctantly resigned in 1988. I have always felt that my heart is in education. I remained active in the schools by substituting and continuing to coach at El Dorado High School. After accepting a long term substituting job teaching English at El Dorado in the spring of 2004, I decided to run for School Board. I remembered immediately how difficult, exhausting and time consuming teaching is. It's a good time to run for the Board - with this memory fresh in my mind.
