Message to TeachersBy Barry D. McQuainCandidate for Board Member; Lafayette School District | |

This questionnaire was requested by the local teachers union and was distributed to all of the teachers in the district. As a school board member, I would like to work with the parents, administration, and other board members to raise the standards and the levels of achievement in the Lafayette public schools. I'm concerned about the recent increases in private and home school enrolment in the area and I also see a rising use of after school programs by many children to "keep up" or "get ahead". This may be a sign that our public schools are not in synch with the demands set by the parents in this community. In addition, it is clear to me from my experience as an international financier during the last fifteen years, that the world our children will inherit will be more competitive then it is today, and we need to do more to prepare them. My core view on education is that the technologies we use - not just computers, but also the tools, processes, and methodologies - must be based on solid, educational research. This research, particularly the growing knowledge base developed within the past fifteen years focusing on effective student outcomes, demonstrates that its application produces consistently higher achievement levels for all children. Most other professions pride themselves on their knowledge base and effective tools - all of which have been extensively tested. Ironically, in education, it is the clients themselves - the students - who are excessively tested. In contrast, it is often the educational tools in education which are untested (textbooks, computer programs, etc.). Teachers deserve the same as members of other professions - access to tools that have been carefully evaluated to ascertain their effectiveness. When reviewing our current practices or considering new initiatives, the questions I will ask are: Was the research valid? Were the students involved compared to a control group who received traditional instruction? Does it have consistently positive effects? Will the results lead to a substantial improvement and/or a cost effective improvement over our current practices? Furthermore, I will also ask: What are the procedures to ensure that the teachers will receive adequate training to implement any new or current approach? How will the teachers and students be monitored to ensure the students are succeeding? I believe strongly in the benefits of regular testing and assessments and would propose we use methodologies and practices - with proven effectiveness based on solid, educational research - to raise the standards. Other issues pertaining to schools and education in this election along with links to some of the research that supports my views can be found in this website. Thank you. Barry McQuain |
