Traffic , Transportation and Safety

By Candace J. (Kay) Andersen

Candidate for Member, Town Council; Town of Danville

This information is provided by the candidate
Councilmember Andersen is implementing solutions to our traffic, transportation, and safety problems.
  • Danville is nearly built out and in most areas we do not have available land to widen our streets or create new roads. We must deal with the increasing demand by other means.

  • I have supported the expansion of a district-wide school bus system to take more drivers off the road during morning and afternoon commute hours. Additional funding for this will be made available with the passage of Measure J.

  • While serving on the Dougherty Valley Oversight Committee I have made sure that developers will pay for school buses to transport Dougherty Valley teenagers who are required to attend Monte Vista High School until the completion of Dougherty Valley High in 2007. This will keep hundreds of single vehicle trips off of our Danville roads on a daily basis.

  • As the Danville Town Council's alternate member to the Central Contra Costa County Transit Authority (County Connection), I strongly support making sure that Danville has adequate bus service to serve the needs of our community. I am also an advocate for making sure that County Connection updates their Basic Level of Service Plan so that new communities, such as Dougherty Valley, will be guaranteed public transportation and not need to rely on only private vehicles.

  • I have taken a leadership role in promoting safety for pedestrians, bicyclists and drivers as Danville's representative on the Street Smart's Advisory Committee. This multi-agency committee, comprised of representatives from Danville, San Ramon, the County, the school district and chambers of commerce met weekly this past summer to implement this new education and awareness program.

  • I have advocated creating safer walking and bicycle routes to our schools so that we can relieve traffic during peak school drop-off and pick-up hours. I worked to secure support of the Camino Tassajara East Side Trail, which was completed this summer. This path, runing parallel to busy Camino Tassajara, is now providing a safe route to school for students at Diablo Vista Middle School. Along with my fellow councilmembers, I approved the creation of a sidewalk along a section of Brookside Drive. In the next few years students attending Baldwin Elementary School will also have a safe alternative to get to school besides their parents driving them. Finding safer routes to all of our schools is a high priority.

  • I support a linkage of all of our Town-wide trails and paths so that bicyclists and pedestrians have the option of traveling a safe distance from our busy roads. Youth can safely walk or ride to school and not be dependent upon their parents to drive them.

  • I have supported additional, innovative ways to keep our roads safe. Radar Speed Displays have been placed on Camino Tassajara and in some residential areas where speeding has been a problem. I supported placing a traffic signal at the intersection of Tunbridge and Sycamore Valley Road. I have voted in favor of lighted crosswalks when needed at busy crossings. As new technology is found, I will continue to support its use on our busy roads to make them safer.

  • I strongly support Danville's successful Neighborhood Traffic Management Program which has provided many neighborhoods with the tools they need to slow down traffic and make roads safer for their residents. I voted to expand this program beyond just neighborhoods but town-wide.

  • The town spends over $1 million each year to maintain the Town's roads at a high level so that the overall pavement condition index will be at 70. I voted to increase the allocation to improve and re-pave more of our roads, especially those which have severely deteriorated.

  • Danville must continue to take a leadership role on our regional Transportation boards so that we can ensure adequate funding for regional and local projects important to our citizens, and to continue to receive the funding we need to keep our roads in the Town well-maintained.
