Like many of you, I am deeply concerned about Malibu's future. I want to see our wonderful community remain a small, rustic, artistic town with more parks and playing fields. I want civility and professionalism in our local government, where people can agree to disagree and still live in harmony. Malibu is at the proverbial "fork in the road." The decisions made by our City Council will affect all of us forever. On April 13th, 2004, you will be able to vote for three city council members. Please cast one vote for me. I am an innovative problem solver, with the temperament, the skills and the experience to truly make a difference. I am dedicated to making Malibu better for everyone!
- PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE - I am a seasoned litigator who served as Associate General Counsel for the Directors Guild of America from 1994 +1998, where I negotiated multi-million dollar settlement agreements with various Studios on behalf of the DGA and its members. In 1998, I was hired as the Hollywood Resident Counsel, Litigation Supervisor for the Screen Actors Guild of America and developed and implemented strategies, which achieved exceptional results. In November 2001, I was appointed the SAG liaison and worked closely with the SAG National Election Committee to help oversee the historical SAG National Office Rerun Election in March 2002. In this capacity, I became intimately familiar with the need for due process and fairness in democratic elections. Locally, I was elected the co-vice president of the Malibu Riviera II Property Owners Association in Point Dume and became familiar with Coastal Commission issues in that capacity. I left SAG in 2002 to start my own law practice here in Malibu so I could be closer to my young children. I am also an adjunct professor at Pepperdine Law School, where I teach a course on the Hollywood Entertainment Guilds.
- LOCAL CONTROL + On September 13, 2002, the California Coastal Commission approved a "Local" Coastal Program that was drafted by the Coastal Commission. It is not acceptable that we are not allowed to have a Local Coastal Program drafted by us, for us. We must put an end to the blame game as to how we got in this terrible mess. We must focus on the future and resolve this issue as quickly as possible. While litigation is always an option we must consider and employ when necessary, I believe that we must save precious financial resources of our community by prioritizing other options whenever possible. I believe we can and should attempt to negotiate a Local Coastal Program that will have local input and will be devoid of punitive and oppressive regulations.
- TRAFFIC AND THE ENVIRONMENT - Together, we must develop strategies to address traffic safety and congestion and grade F water quality rating. We must improve communication regarding traffic conditions and implement strategies to reduce and manage congestion on PCH. It is not acceptable for our beaches to have a grade F water quality rating. We must work together to resolve environmental pollution.
- CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION - I value and promise to promote the arts in Malibu in every way that is feasible, and productive for the community. The arts are a natural expression of who we are and a great, untapped strength that together we can build on.
I won't pretend to have the answers to all of these questions, but I do promise to work hard and focus on finding solutions to these problems now. I also promise to be responsive and accessible to every citizen if elected. In this election, some people can spend lots of money to get "their people" elected. I can't and won't win this election without the support of all of the citizens of Malibu. If you don't help now, then tomorrow you may have a City Council that is responsive to the needs of a few privileged individuals instead of all of Malibu's citizens. Thank you for any support you can give, whether it be one dollar or one hundred dollars, displaying a yard sign or walking with me in your neighborhood. By working together, we can MAKE MALIBU BETTER!
