May the City contract with the California Public
Employee Retirement System for retirement
benefits for District Attorneys, Public Defenders and
Public Defender investigators
if there is no change in cost to the City?
Measure B is a Charter amendment that
would permit the City to contract with the California
Public
Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS) to provide
increased
retirement benefits to Assistant District Attorneys,
Deputy Public
Defenders and investigators employed by the Public
Defender if
there is no change in cost to the City.
Under this contract, these employees would be eligible
for retirement
benefits similar to the retirement benefits received by
City
police officers, deputy sheriffs and firefighters. After 20
years of
City service, police officers, deputy sheriffs and
firefighters who
retire:
ï at age 50 receive a pension that is 48% of the
employee's
highest salary; and
ï at age 55 receive a pension that is 60% of the
employee's
highest salary.
The maximum pension would increase to 90% of the
employee's
highest salary.
