My philosophy has been influenced by my experiences. I grew up in rural North Carolina and saw both good and difficult times as a youth. I am fiscally conservative by nature but was only able to attend college by having government sponsored after school jobs and receiving scholarships, grants and federal student loans. As a result, I do believe government can assist in helping people help themselves. I believe in the philosophy of "teaching someone who is hungry how to fish rather than give them a fish every day". Regarding schools, I believe that parent involvement is the biggest factor determining success. Schools that enjoy higher parential involvement always have higher student acheivement. Encouraging parents to take part in more than just the classrooms but also participating in school district finance sessions and planning meetings for future investments in facilities are critical.
