In 2002, I was unanimously appointed to the Foothill-De Anza (FHDA) Community College District Board of Trustees. Prior to FHDA, I served 10 years on the Santa Clara County Board of Education. I have the expertise and education needed to lead FHDA - Masters degrees from U.C. Berkeley in public policy & education and service as an adjunct community college professor. A Northern Santa Clara County native, I attended Palo Alto schools K - 12. Foothill and De Anza are model California community colleges. While the UCs serve the top 15% and CSUs serve the top 30% of high school graduates, the community colleges serve the top 100%. Community colleges offer low cost college for students who are first in their families to attend college and those students transferring to four-year universities; job training and career certificates; and life-long learning. Accomplishments since I joined the board: · Expanded course offerings for students. · Hired a new chancellor, De Anza President Martha Kanter. · Signed an educational partnership with NASA-Ames. · Implemented "green" building practices in our capital projects. · Raised faculty and staff salaries while balancing the budget There is more to do - protect the colleges from State budget cuts; preserve programs to serve students; and create partnerships with businesses that have jobs for our graduates. I appreciate your vote. |
