Dr. Gary Thomas Scott - Biography
Dr. Gary Thomas Scott was born in Pasadena and raised in San Gabriel. He brings a wide range of educational experience to his work. Dr. Scott attended San Gabriel schools, as did his brothers, wife and children. He received his BA and MA degrees in Music Education from California State University at Los Angeles and completed his Ed.D, Doctorate of Education, at UCLA. He has enjoyed a long and distinguished career in education.
Dr. Scott was Director of Bands at Bellflower High School for six years before accepting the position of Associate Director of Bands at Cal-State Los Angeles in 1982. He joined the staff at Cerritos College as Director of Bands in August of 1985 while serving concurrently as an Instrumental Music Specialist for the Rowland Unified School District where he helped to develop a nationally recognized traveling music bus program. Gary began teaching at Long Beach City College in August of 1988 and was hired as full time Director of Bands in 1991. His work and energy there helped to develop one of the premier Community College Band programs in the California Community College system.
Dr. Scott is currently the Dean of the School of Creative Arts and Applied Sciences at Long Beach City College. In addition to his responsibilities at the College, Dr. Scott has served as the State Instrumental Music Representative for MACCC, the Music Association of the California Community Colleges. He continues to direct the Long Beach City College Evening Wind Symphony is the founder and musical director of the Band of the California Battalion, a fully reenacted Civil War Brass Band.
Dr. Gary Thomas Scott is currently a member and past President of the Board of Education in the San Gabriel Unified School District and also serves as cantor at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in San Gabriel where he has sung for the past 23 years. He and his wife Mary are very acti ve in a variety of community and church activities. They have two children Michael who is 26 and "Andi" who is 19. The couple recently celebrated their 29th wedding anniversary. Dr. Scott remains active as an educator, performer, clinician, administrator and consultant throughout the United States.
