The Board of Trustees is charged with the resposibility of directing the affairs of the district by setting policies, approving or disapproving recommendations of the administrative staff in all matters involving budget, instruction, and personnel, and by directing and evaluating the performance of the superintendent. The board does not manage the district but exercises its authority by setting priorities, goals, and objectives that it expects its staff to accomplish. It must see that a system of accountability for all employees is in place and that it is actively enforced. It protects the interests of the students and the investment of the community by critically monitoring the merit of all instructional activities and expenditures of funds. The board thus provides oversight on behalf of the community to the work performed by the professional educators. A good board is one that remains in close touch with the concerns and aspirations of the district's parents and residents and makes all decisions - even very difficult ones - in the best interests of the students. A personal goal of mine would be to work with the four other members to set a standard of integrity and excellence for the Whittier Union High School District's Board of Trustees that will stand for many years to come.
