Single adults are the Rodney Dangerfields of California. They "don't get no respect."
Politicians complain about the marriage penalty. But what about the singles penalty? Singles find themselves the object of systematic discrimination in many areas. I believe single adults deserve the same rights and benefits as their married counterparts:
- Equal Taxes. Singles pay more than their fair share.
- Equal Insurance. Singles often pay astronomical auto insurance rates.
- Equal Retirement Benefits. If a married person dies, his/her retirement benefits go to the spouse or dependents. If a single person dies, the benefits are forfeited.
- Equal Employee Benefits. Married workers have the opportunity to add spouses and dependents to their benefit packages. Singles are not allowed to add their live-in partners or live-in parents or relatives.
- Equal Housing. Married soldiers receive a housing subsidy and a food subsidy. Single soldiers get to live in the barracks.
- Equal Unemployment Benefits. Married workers receive unemployment benefits if their spouses move to another state. Single workers do not.
