Jane Howard on EducationBy Jane HowardCandidate for Member; California State Assembly; District 28 | |
This information is provided by the candidate |
The purpose of public education is to make sure that children learn. We must demand accountability in education.Every child has the potential to learn and succeed, but we seem to focus on everything but that goal. Schools are bombarded with directives on teacher credentials, school building standards, what books to use, health care programs, and on and on...everything except accountability. We need to re-think education. We need to stop dictating from Sacramento a one-size-fits-all system for every school. We need less bureaucracy and more freedom on the community level to stop declining student achievement and bureaucratic waste of school dollars. Let the state set a standard, but then let the local schools decide how to reach that goal We must allow local school boards to determine how education dollars are spent. We must require that teachers, administrators, and school board members be held directly accountable to the community they serve for their successes and their failures. |
