QUARRYBy Bruce D. HotchkissCandidate for City Council; City of Pacifica | |

We can build the Quarry development Pacifica wants. The Quarry is the most important issue facing Pacifica on November 5, 2002. Trammell Crow has made a vague proposal for the Quarry. The only part of their proposal that is not vague is the housing element 315 housing units! This would be a housing development larger than Fairway Park, East and West, which is just to the north. The people of Pacifica have made it clear over the years they do not want the Quarry to be a housing development. They want it to become Pacifica's Town Center. Trammell Crow has tried to muddy the water and sway voters by promising a new library and fire station. So far, all that Trammell Crow has promised is land to build these facilities on. Even that promise is tied to some vague point in time after the homes have been built. Trammell Crow's promise has brought support from library advocates and firefighters. There is a need for two libraries and another fire station. The question is whether we can afford to finance the buildings, employees, and equipment. Trammell Crow has thrown out a tax revenue figure that the new housing will generate around $900,000. A new fire station will cost well over $1,000,000 per year just to run - $900,000 just does not cut it. Another argument for building 315 homes is to support the retail development that may, some day, be built. If businesses have not been able to make a go of it with just under 40,000 residents, what makes anyone think an additional 1,000 or so will make any business viable? What do I favor in the Quarry? A lovely, welcoming "Main Street" full of shops and restaurants that visitors and citizens will want to patronize again and again. Trammell Crow wants what they want. Pacifica should stand firm for what it wants even if it means we do it ourselves. WE CAN DO IT PACIFICA! |
