Some of my goals as your school board member are as follows: Expand the opportunities for a well-rounded education for all students to include not only the standard academic subjects, but also technology, vocational, fine arts, and physical fitness courses. The objective of the educational system is to give all students the groundwork for developing strong thinking skills, the ability to work with others, and the desire and ability to attain their highest personal goals. Ensure sound financial management and fiscal responsibility with the goal of a quality education for EVERY student regardless of ability. The district will always be operating within budget constraints, and well thought out financial decisions are absolutely necessary. The budget should be established with more input from teachers. In addition, I believe it was a mistake to out-source the bus driver contract. It was neither prudent nor fair. To better utilize resources, I would actively pursue working relationships with businesses and other organizations, such as Cuesta College, in order to broaden educational opportunities for all. Restore and maintain open, honest, and forthright communication between the school board and teachers, parents, classified employees, and students. I will focus on rebuilding the atmosphere of teamwork between the board and all district employees. Open lines of communication are key to the smooth working relationships needed to accomplish the goal of quality education. In summary, students need to have the best building blocks possible in order to achieve the highest level of success in their lives. The success of the educational system cannot be measured solely on the basis of test scores, statewide standings, or graduates entering four year colleges. Graduation rates, skills for entering the workplace, and attainment of individual goals are also critical. Remaining in school to graduate is crucial for each child's future. Students have different levels of comprehension and different learning styles and abilities. Every effort needs to be made to ensure that no students are left behind or fall through the cracks - neither bored nor overwhelmed. |
