I have always believed that the best government is an activist type of government, solving problems within and outside of your purview. Our local schools need leaders on the city council for help - Councilmembers can coordinate what limited resources are at the disposal of City Hall with our school system, allowing the school system to save money and re-channel saved funds into classrooms.

Think about it: when young families look to places to buy homes - or when businesses make their business location decisions, what is the first thing that comes to mind? Schools. Thus, it is in the interest of City Hall to coordinate with the school district.

Being an activist also means taking leadership positions, as I have done, on matters regarding our environmental well-being. I have taken leadership positions on the IES medical waste incinerator issues and Oakalnd Airport expansion issue.

At the same time, I have worked to ensure that City Hall prioritizes neighborhood issues above all else, such as traffic safety, the best neighborhood recycling and waste programs, maintaining high quality park system, and attracting quality retail, such as Trader Joe's.
