Energy

By Gloria Purcell

Candidate for Member, Green Party County Council; County of San Mateo

This information is provided by the candidate
More urgently than ever before, we need sustainable energy for California. As a strong voice in the Green Party, I advocate the requirement of solar roofing for all new homes and minimal cost retrofit solar for all existing homes (with shady exceptions). In 1900, homes were not required to be wired for electricity, nor for the telephone. Times change. We should have started serious solar programs many years ago. All schools and other public buildings should have solar power as soon as possible.

The local Greens are an active voice of volunteers who have spoken out on the problems of nuclear energy and protested reckless disposal of wastes, been present on the streets and in the written word during the P. G. and E. disgraceful ripoff of both the taxpayers and their shareholders, and campaigned with enthusiasm and knowledge for San Francisco and Brisbane Municipal Utility District efforts. Public power, not power for profit, will serve us better. I will continue to participate in efforts to create public utility districts; I am intensely proud of our volunteers.

All generators, all vehicles, and all small-engine machinery such as leaf blowers and lawn mowers must be held to strict and equal emissions control standards. The air we breathe and the health of our children is at stake. Asthma rates are soaring. I have spoken at the city, county and state level to public agencies and will continue to do so. Fuel efficiency can be achieved along with emissions reduction.
