Verna started out as a young democrat in 1944. She ran for the Linda Vista Council and successfully beat her opponent. She then was involved with the Democratic party and was the recipient of her first democratic award in 1948. Her precinct went out 310-10 for president Harry Truman. In 1948, she held the first democratic coffee klatz for Clinton D. McKinnon for Congress who was successful in his bid. She later sent out over 10,000 letters to Northern California in his bid for the U.S. Senate. She has never been afraid to tackling a big job. She started the practice in San Diego of knocking on doors because of her success. From 1948 to 1955, she managed many local and State national campaigns, some of which included Degraff Austin, Gov. Adlai Stevenson, Sen. John Sparkman, Gov. Pat Brown Sr., Helen G. Douglas, Lionel Van Deerlin, Hubert Humphrey, John Kennedy, Robert Kennedy, Gov. Jerry Brown, Mayor Tom Bradley, Kathleen Brown, Walter Mondale. She has served on the State Committee since 1950. She has registered voters from the City of San Diego to Fallbrook. She has served on the Democratic Central Committee recently from 1972. She was elected to the Temporary Platform Committee and later appointed by Chairperson Kirk and attended the Denver meeting. She was elected as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention 1976-1984. She was an alternate in 1980 and attended the 1988 Convention. Additional awaards from the Democratic Party include 1990 Jeferson Jackson Chair, 1990 Henry Auerbach Award, 1990 Woman of the Year, Peter Chacon Award, 1988 Logan Heights Memorial Award, 1986 San Diego Centdral Committee, P.T.A. Honorary Life Award, Wadie Deddah Award, Delta Kappa Gamma and more. |
