Public power ensures reasonable rate, greener and more reliable source, and local community controlHigh utility rates and rolling blackouts are problems that endangers the health and safety of all residents and businesses. The type of public policies the MUD board establishes will impact the quality of life of all those who live and work in S.F. and Brisbane. The energy crisis gave us a wake-up call on our energy policy and consumption habits. It also created a window of opportunity to make a profound change in the direction of our energy future. Public utilities are not profit oriented. Crucial public policies aimed at conservation and development of renewable energy sources supersedes short-term profits for stockholders. With the threat of impending war in the middle east, opportunities for greedy power companies to once again manipulate the energy market abound. Not for profit public utility is the only way to ensure reasonable rates and an end to price gouging. The investment in clean renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, geothermal, and biomass, not only free us from the uncertainty of reliance on imported fossil fuel, it promotes environmental justice. Under a MUD, local voters determines what type of power plants they want and where it is to be built. Out of town power company will no longer be able to concentrate polluting power plants in low - income neighborhoods. My vision for what the MUD board should do for the first year is to: . Reach a settlement with PG&E for their assets |
