A New VoiceBy Alberto TorricoCandidate for Member, City Council; City of Newark | |
This information is provided by the candidate |
By collecting nearly 500 signatures in support of his candidacy, Alberto Torrico demonstrates that he has broad base support in the community. On August 7, 2001, Alberto Torrico submitted Nomination Papers for the City Council, officially becoming the youngest candidate on this November's ballot. Over the past two weeks, Alberto Torrico and more than 30 volunteers visited homes throughout Newark. The volunteers, that included fellow residents, as well as friends, and family of the candidate, contacted over 650 Newark residents to discuss their concerns. The volunteers gathered nearly 500 signatures in support of Torrico's nomination for the City Council. Based on the discussions with residents, Torrico says that is clear that, "Newark residents are ready for new ideas and a new voice." An attorney at the Valley Transportation Authority, Torrico says "our community faces many challenges: traffic congestion worsens every day, our public schools are under-resourced, and neighborhood services are stretched to the limit. With my expertise we can begin addressing these challenges." After assessing the responses of dozens of Newark residents to his campaign's survey, Torrico states that, "I will address the issues important to all of us. I will demand smart growth, with full consideration of the impact any business or residential development will have on existing Newark residents. I will propose the expansion of services available at our community and senior citizen centers. These centers can and should be living and learning centers." Torrico, who has worked as a Policy Aide to the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors, knows the importance of working closely with the community. In short, Torrico says, "I want to ensure that Newark makes the right choices to secure our children's future and to keep our unique small-town feel." |
