Over 28 years as a professor of English at Miami University, Oxford, Ohio. Author of books and articles. Served as Methodist minister over four years in Southern California. Active in civil rights movement. Born and raised in San Pedro, California. Educated in public schools, graduated from the University of California at Berkeley in 1963 with a B.A. in political science. Completed the Doctor of Religion degree at the School of Theology at Claremont in 1968. Completed the Ph.D. in American Studies at the University of New Mexico, 1973. Active in sports all my life--football, gymnastics, boxing, tennis, backpacking, and handball. Youth service with Boy Scouts, Y.M.C.A., and church. Active in community, serving on boards of directors of Christian Cooperative Nursery School, campus ministry, community theater, and local alternative school. Married, father of two children.
