As you know, many changes have taken place in Newman in the past several years. Some of these changes have adversely affected us emotionally and monetarily. Sometimes it seems our city government does not have our best interests in mind during the decision making process. While I know a Plaza and a Theater is important to our community's growth and appearance, I feel we have neglected our social obligation to our children in this community by mainly focusing our attention and funds on the beautification of the downtown area. Two years ago I suggested building a skate/BMX park, teen center, a new community pool or recondition our existing one and more community parks. Why have these been ignored until now, an election year? I'm sure everyone has noticed the condition and lack of maintenance on our sidewalks and streets. Recently a citizen tripped over a raised portion of a sidewalk and was injured. The city has numerous areas of poorly maintained sidewalks and streets that are also potentially hazardous and would cost the city more in the long run in claims than actually repairing them. The city needs to follow the recommendations of the Maintenance Director and Supervisor in regards to these issues of public safety. Last time I ran for Mayor I was told that the only reason that I was running for Mayor was to fire the Chief of Police. First, the Mayor alone does not have the power to hire or fire any city employee. Second, what I said was the Police Department needs to be restructured. Why is it that in the past 10 years we have lost approximately 20 officers? I feel that if you are going to make any rules or regulations that the citizens are to follow they should include everyone, not just certain people. Any person should have the right to park a registered vehicle on any street without being towed or ticketed if the vehicle is in proper running order and not under repair. |
