Mews Small, a native Californian, grew up in a small town at the foot of the Angeles Forest. Her doctor father and artist mother instilled in her a deep love of the land and an abiding respect for all humanity. She is proud of her family history. Her great grand-parents were abolitionists, suffragettes, workers for human rights. Involved in women getting the vote and were strong union organizers. Mews has been a working actress since she moved to New York City as a teenager. She originated the role of "Frenchy" in Grease on Broadway opposite John Travolta. While working with Dustin Hoffman and Morgan Freeman among others, she was also popular on the night-club circuit. Mews returned to Los Angeles in 1973 with Woody Allen's Sleeper and has lived in Los Angeles County since. Mews has had feature roles in 18 feature films and numerous TV shows working with Susan Sarandon, Henry Fonda, James Earl Jones, Elizabeth Taylor,Danny Devito, Vanessa Redgrave and with Jack Nicholson in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. Currently she can be seen in the feature film, Man on the Moon, starring Jim Carrey. When time allows, Mews paints, skis and plays softball. Mews's heroes include Nelson Mandela, Yitzak Rabin, Martin Luther King Jr., Aung San Suu Kyi, Ralph Nader, Paul Robeson, Pat Schroeder, Thurgood Marshall and Eleanor Roosevelt, who said, "You must do the thing you think you cannot do." Contributions to our Community Mews believes many of the most important contributions can be made without spending a lot of money. She has spent a great deal of time involving people in community building projects that make a difference. These include: · Co-produced the "Freedom Behind Bars" benefit to aid rehabilitation programs for California prisons. · Has Organized the community to channel aid for battered women and aided in efforts to find affordable housing. · Created Small Environmental Recycling Program for neighborhood offices. · Twenty-five years performing for children and veterans in hospitals, and seniors in retirement homes. · Created a meditation center to help people become less stressed, bringing about a more peaceful community. · Twenty-five years of participating in world peace assemblies to dissolve stress in the environment. · Supports and participates in Handicapped Artists & Performers, Inc. (HAPPI). · Mews and her sister Emily, work with Ralph Nader and the Oaks Project. · Worked personally with homeless and disabled. Also produced and participated in short films and commercials for the homeless and disabled. • Volunteer for peoples radio, KFFK - 90.7 FM "Everybody has talents. Everybody wants a better world. Most of my real successes have been getting people involved in activities that make a stronger more positive community." Mews has her own band and performs live locally frequently.
