A journalist asked why I continue to run for Public Office...for Assembly in 1992, for Rancho Santiago College Board in 1996, and today, again, for Assembly. This District has been my home for the last 28 years. It is one of the most conservative areas in America and has very low Democratic registration.
I have helped with school funding and healthcare initiatives, with peace education, and affordable housing. Many of us waw the public corruption in the county and helped expose and control it with TIN CUP, Shirley Grindle's
campaign reform ordinance. I was a coordinator for Common Cause and worked to pass the Equal Rights Amendment in the early 70s. When peace was a suspect word, I founded the California Peace Academy. We co-sponsored the Great Peace March across America and the International Peace Walk and Concert in Moscow in 1987.
As a college and public school teacher, I have seen the need for better education and school facilities go critical- for example, at Santa Ana Unified, one semester,
I had to teach 120 students outside on the pavement for one
period each day. They had to sit on concrete and draw their art assignments on the ground.
