Traffic

By Jane Bender

Candidate for Member, City Council; City of Santa Rosa

This information is provided by the candidate
Traffic is one of the major issues in our city. It demands our attention. I will give it the time it deserves.
Although sections of Highway 101 will be widened in the near future, we must make sure that the entire stretch from Novato to Windsor is completed. At the same time, we must work to develop the rail line from Cloverdale to San Rafael. I am committed to working with other councils, our Board of Supervisors and our legislators to get the dollars from Sacramento and Washington that we need to get those two jobs done.

Widening 101 will not solve all our traffic problems. Surface streets need attention, particularly those that run east and west through Santa Rosa. Work is to begin soon on a long-awaited partial interchange at Highway 12 and Farmers lane. When that is complete, we can then look at streets around it to determine if other improvements need to be made.

We must make public transit more accessible to larger numbers of people. We need to find ways to accommodate bicycles and pedestrians.

These are not easy problems to solve, but if we work with state and federal legislators, local industries, neighbors and transit officials, we can find solutions.
