My connection to San Mateo began in the 1930's my grandmother grew up in Milbrae and San Bruno. My Grandmother attended San Mateo High School (with Merv Griffin) and College of San Mateo to become a school secretary. My Grandfather joined the Army as a paratrooper, and was stationed in Okinawa Japan. After the War he like so many men of his generation he decided to come to the San Francisco Bay Area after the war. My grandfather worked in the construction industry, he built homes and apartments all over the peninsula, including San Mateo's Laurelwood neighborhood. In the late 60's my grandparents built a home in Belmont. Growing up this meant me and my older brother would visit Central Park on Sunday's. Back then the train was 4 cars long and was red white and blue. Today I am fortunate enough to call San Mateo home and I take my daughters Sofia and Olivia to Central Park. I have lived in San Mateo for the past 10 years, but have visited my whole life, my family is from a modest background. I have desirable and less desirable neighborhoods and understand the challenges of both communities. To pay for College I had to work two jobs and work hard to get where I am today. I attended College of San Mateo (where I met my wife, married at 22) and transferred to California State University Hayward, where I obtained a B.S. in Business Administration with concentrations in accounting and finance. After College I worked for a few regional CPA firms, obtained my CPA license, and then joined Ernst & Young. Currently, I work in the finance department at the City of San Jose where I oversee the operations of a Hotel and Conference Center and help prepare the City's annual report. I have attended the City Service Academy and volunteered extensively in my community including several years with Tax Aide thru Ernst and Young to assist lower income residents and seniors with their tax preparation at the King Center, have volunteered with Save the Bay to remove invasive plant species and maintain a healthy habitat on our bayshore, I am an active board member of my homeowners association, and I have participated in charitable causes such as the Light the Night Walk by the Leukemia and Lymphoma society. |
