I am the parent of a second grade student and a school volunteer at Hidden Valley School. I previously served for eight years as an elected board member with the Dixie Elementary School District in San Rafael while my three older children attended school there. I have served on significant committees with the Marin County Office of Education (Committee on School District Organization) and the California School Boards Association (Children's Health Task Force and Legislative Committee) in order to support public education in Marin County and throughout California. I am running for the Ross Valley Board to use this experience to help our schools reach their full potential.

I currently live in Sleepy Hollow with my wife, Nancy, and youngest daughter, Lauren. Beyond the good schools, we have enjoyed a lot of what this community offers through our daughter's involvement in various sports and performing arts programs, including:

  • Sleepy Hollow's swim team (and Pups program)
  • YMCA Program
  • Stapleton ballet
  • Stapleton's Performing Arts program (i.e., a role in Seussical The Musical)
  • Marin Girls Chorus
  • San Anselmo Recreation Department programs, and
  • various other summer camps and activities.

My three older children all attended school in San Rafael. My oldest, Matthew, is currently in his last year of law school at UC Berkeley's Boalt Hall. My daughter, Emma, is a graduate of Willamette University in Oregon. And, my daughter, Jane, is in her second year as a theater major at Emerson College in Boston.

I received my B.A. degree in Economics and Communication from Stanford University in 1983. I was a member of the Stanford NCAA Volleyball team from 1979-1983, and Captain of the team from 1982-83. In 1989, I received my J.D. from Loyola Law School, Loyola Marymount University and was admitted to the California Bar that same year.

I am the managing partner and head litigator of the San Francisco office of Hooper, Lundy & Bookman, P.C., the largest full service law practice in the country dedicated solely to the representation of health care providers. Throughout my legal career, I have represented long term care facilities, hospitals, physician groups, home health agencies, hospices, medical product suppliers, trade associations, and other health-related entities in California and in numerous other states. I am the General Counsel for the California Association of Health Facilities; a member/former-chair of the Legal Committee for the American Health Care Association; and, a board member for the American Board of Medical Quality. I am also a nationally recognized speaker, instructor and author on health related topics. I also sit on other various boards and committees related to my profession.

Experience counts! I enjoyed the opportunity to serve as a Board Member/President of the Dixie School Board from June 1997 to June 2005. Some of my other community involvement activities during that period included:

  • Dixie District Volunteer of the Year, 2000-2001
  • Member, Dixie District Advisory Team/Collective Bargaining Team and the Budget Committee
  • Member/Chair, Marin County Committee on School District Organization (elected in 1999; served until 2005)
  • Member, Children's Health Task Force commissioned by the California School Boards Association (2001)
  • Member, Legislative Committee of the California School Boards Association (2002 and 2003)
  • Member, North San Rafael Vision In Action Committee (1998 to 2001)
  • Member, Finance Committee for "Kids Count" Bond Campaign for the San Rafael and Dixie Districts (1999)
  • Volunteer in the Parcel Tax Campaign for the San Rafael and Dixie Districts (1998)
  • Formerly served on the Dixie District GATE Committee (1½ years).
  • Taught mock trial classes for the GATE program (1999 and 2000).
  • Dixie School Site Council (1995 to 1997)
  • Member of the Board for non-profit organization, "Love is the Answer" (LITA) (2001)
