It takes a community to raise a community!Leslie Acosta was raised by both parents in North Philadelphia. She is the youngest of four children. In the late 1990s Leslie began her journey of volunteerism for urban communities in the Philadelphia Region providing mentoring & tutoring services to children. Leslie began her career as a Social worker, providing services to children and families in their own home (SCOH). Her work focused on empowering, rebuilding and reforming the family system. She then pursued a career as a Child Advocate social worker for the Public Defender's office. Her active involvement included consultations with attorneys, Therapists, Probation Officers, Department of Human Services (DHS) and interfacing with other support systems. Her role included coalition building, advocating for family reunification, suitable housing, equitable school placements and fighting for adequate wage jobs, particularly when mainstreaming young adults back into the community from adjudicated placements. Her approach was collaborative, knowledge-based, and focused on results. Leslie has a wide range of experience in various sectors including non-profit and Federal Government. She is currently an adjunct professor at Esperanza College of Eastern University, serving the Hispanic and local communities. Her goal is to enhance knowledge and leadership skills of young adults, so that they can live thoughtful, positive, productive, and purposeful lives. Her mission is confirmed and celebrated when graduates believe their way into knowledgeable action that influences their world in substantial ways. Her professional career outside of academia includes hands on effort with several community outreach endeavors. She was elected as a committee person. She served on the Board of Directors, as Vice President, for Bucks County Mental Health Clinic. Helping and consulting on many issues regarding managed care services. She co-developed a management consultant firm, seeking to help small businesses improve outpatient behavioral health services. She is experienced in campaign work. Leslie's leadership abilities have enabled successful voter turnout and participation for various candidates at the legislative, judicial and executive branch of government. Leslie graduated from Mastbaum High School of Philadelphia before attending Cairn University where she obtained a dual degree, a BS and BSW. She also obtained an M.B.A. An important aspect of her life is family, leadership, accountability, and community. Leslie believes it takes a community to raise a community. |
