It's time for a change in the Half Moon Bay City CouncilBy Harvey RarbackCandidate for Council Member; City of Half Moon Bay | |
This information is provided by the candidate |
Our present City Council members act in unison to make poor decisions that waste our money and disrespect our laws.I am tired of poor decisions being made at City Hall. Did you know that our City Council recklessly spent about $500,000 of your money on consultants' plans to destroy the Main Street Bridge two years before they supposedly asked for your input on the project? The citizens were able to stop this action only because we voted overwhelmingly to stop their wasteful spending by passing Measure F in June. Now our City Council wants you to approve Measure O, a sales tax hike, to pay for these and other expenses. The City Council voted to pass off liability for sidewalks to the individual business person and homeowner. It is a basic obligation of government to protect its citizens, not cause them to be victims of potentially large liability law suits. Again, during the term of our incumbents, a judge found the City knowingly violated its own coastal protection regulations by clearing stream vegetation without a permit. The City settled this lawsuit for over $300,000 after spending $100,000 to defend itself in court, expenses that easily could have been avoided. These episodes are emblematic of an approach to governing that (1) flouts our laws; (2) wastes our tax dollars; and (3) threatens our land. It doesn't have to be this way, however. If you wish to change the direction of our present Council, I am requesting that my supporters vote for the three reform candidates who are pledged to honesty, transparency and fiscal prudence
Deborah Ruddock is a former Mayor of Half Moon Bay who among her other achievements has helped preserve our small town character and improve traffic flow on Highway 92. Dr. Penrose is a long time local doctor who now has a chance to heal our community. All three of these candidates will work together to fix our Council. I am extremely gratefully for all the support I have received from the community and I hope that you will respect my decision to withdraw from the race and support the three reform candidates. We deserve better government in Half Moon Bay. I believe that my withdrawal from this race makes that eventuality more likely. --Harvey Rarback |
