Issues Parent, Teacher, Community Volunteer COMMITMENT TO EDUCATION: Bertha Lopez has taught for 38 years in the National School District. She has served for 10 years as board member of the Chula Vista Elementary School District. She is determined to make sure that the dwindling California State Budget does not harm our students. She has fought to keep the cuts away from the classroom by focusing cuts on district office administration and eliminating wasteful programs. Bertha Lopez is a careful manager of public resources. She is an advocate for school site leadership and community control of schools. She opposes eliminating school boundaries; every school, in every neighborhood needs to be an excellent school. Parent involvement increases when students attend their neighborhood school. Bertha Lopez knows that highly trained teachers have the biggest impact on student achievement. Teachers need to be supported in the Common Core Curriculum. This 21st Century learning program is essential to prepare our students for college or careers after high school. ADVOCATE FOR STUDENTS: She is a tireless advocate for students. Schools should be about instruction and not construction. She demands that governing and policy meetings center on academic and student services and not buildings and gimmicks. She supports sports, visual and performing arts and vocational programs that complement the core curriculum. HOLDS PEOPLE ACCOUNTABLE: Bertha Lopez will be your elected watchdog. She values fairness, openness and integrity. She will let you know when things are not going right. She will be your voice on the Governing Board. She strongly believes in increasing student achievement, promoting parent involvement, and protecting public resources. She asks for your support.
