Full Biography for Carol Kim
Candidate for |

|
Carol Kim is an educator, community volunteer and married mother of two who lives in Mira Mesa. New to politics, but not to public service, Carol has spent her life giving back to the community. She began her career as a classroom teacher in an inner city school, where she also served as the coordinator for a Fine Arts program and lead an after-school program for at-risk boys. She later worked in HIV prevention, connecting underserved populations with health resources and serving high-risk groups including youth in foster care, the LGBT community, and communities of color. Carol also provided training on HIV and related topics for public health nurses, community service providers, and teacher candidates. For the last seven years, Carol has worked with schools and school districts in San Diego and throughout the state of California to provide effective programs that support health, safety, and well-being for students in public schools, and to develop career and technical education opportunities for students, in partnership with community colleges. Carol is a first generation American born of Korean immigrant parents. Like many immigrants, Carol's parents arrived in the United States with little in the way of money or job prospects. They started a small business in the clothing retail and manufacturing industry and were able to provide for their family and put their four children through college. That is why Carol understands the importance of small business to the families, communities, and economy of San Diego. For Carol small business isn't just a talking point, it is a passion. Carol received her Bachelor of Arts degree in English from UCLA and her Master of Education degree from National University. Carol is a member of the National Asian Pacific American Women's Forum (NAPAWF); Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance (APALA); Asian Pacific American Coalition (APAC); Asian Pacific Islander American Public Affairs Association; Clairemont Town Council; Mira Mesa Town Council; House of Korea (San Diego); Friends of Los Penasquitos Canyon Preserve; and the Hage Elementary PTA. |
