Public schools are the lifeblood of a democracy. Ten years ago, I ran for and won a seat on the Santa Cruz City Schools Board because I saw an opportunity to make a difference in how decisions were made in public education in Santa Cruz--in the schools where my kids were receiving a great education. During my tenure on the board, I have taken a leadership role to make that difference, ensuring our schools:
Budget responsibly--as co-chair of the budget committee, I closely follow and understand the complexities of the state's education funding system. Over the years, I have found millions of dollars to support kids in the classroom.
Support teachers, staff, and students--during the worst recession in my lifetime, I kept cuts away from the classroom while maintaining raises already promised in teacher contracts.
Maintain strong programs for students--the two parcel tax campaigns I co-chaired raised $20 million for arts, libraries, counselors, science, small class sizes, early literacy, and teacher salaries.
Further the success of English language learners--scores are up and more English language learners are prepared for college.
Support solar energy and green projects--the Green Schools committee I have led for seven years has saved money and reduced our carbon footprint. It has won two prestigious state-wide awards for greening school sites, educating students, and collaborating with other community organizations. I am excited to keep going as the school district faces tough issues. |
