Common CoreBy Sanjay DaveCandidate for Board Member; Mountain View-Los Altos Union High School District | |

Common Core, we need transparency and deliberate communication on its benefits and roll out.Change is always difficult...especially in education; and more so in communities having high expectations for its schools. In Mountain View-Los Altos, with its schools having already strong records of excellence, parents may reasonably expect our educational leaders to carefully scrutinize any new approach to teaching our children, and to carefully weigh whether such changes have merit. Across the U.S the Common Core has become a lightning rod issue, and the public is in a `show me' mood, rightfully demanding assurances that Common Core is the correct path for their children. The challenge faced by school boards and educators everywhere is to educate parents in a way that sheds light--not more heat. Parents need and deserve to understand the value of Common Core for their kids, and the justification and rationale for such changes. To this end, the MVLA High School Board needs to increase their commitment to communicating with parents on an ongoing basis as the roll-out of the Common Core takes place, and to answer questions such as: Is change necessary? How will such changes add value to my child's education? What are reasonable expectations for such changes? Are we getting the results we expect? How will progress be measured? All these questions require every District to increase efforts at improving transparency, and finding better means to communicate, so the public get the information they need to support any change. A more enlightened community will result in a more engaged community, one that will continue to support its schools. Sanjay Dave Candidate MVLA Trustee |
