I am a proud graduate of College of the Desert. After being honorably discharged from the Marine Corps, I visited College of the Desert without a career plan. Mr. Ronald Green, Counselor, helped me and my life changed forever. Due to his inspirational support, I now possess A.A., B.A. and M.A. Degrees. I have Teaching, Counseling and Administrative Credentials for K-12 and Community Colleges.

I was employed at College of the Desert as a Counselor, Instructor and Administrator.

My wife, Mary Ann was employed at College of the Desert for 16 years and served as President of the California School Employees Association, Chapter 407.

I currently serve on the Desert Sands School Board and have been an elected member for 28 years. I am a lifetime member of the College of the Desert President's Circle and Alumni Association. I was honored to be chosen Faculty Member of the Year in 2006 and earned Emeritus Status and the College of the Desert Presidential Medal.

I will stand for accountability, making decisions on behalf of the constituency I serve, strive for more class offerings, facilitate admissions for local high school graduates, coordinate with local K12 districts, promote fair and equitable salary and benefits for all employees and support the Main, East Valley and West Valley Campuses.

Why Matt Monica is Running for College of the Desert Trustee

If it wasn't for College of the Desert, I wouldn't be here today. Everything in my life I consider a successful goal, is a direct result of attending College of the Desert.

If elected to the College of the Desert Board of Trustees, I will bring my life experiences (especially those learned while being a student and employee at College of the Desert). I will bring the expertise and knowledge I have learned by being a member of the Desert Sands Board of Education for 28 years.

I know what the needs of the students are and will provide services on their behalf. As the former Director and Counselor for the Financial Aid Program at College of the Desert, I know that most students need this assistance and I will make sure it is provided.

As a Member of the Board of Trustees, I will have the opportunity to be part of the process of setting policy that benefits students. Like most students at College of the Desert, I was the first member of my family to receive an Associate of Arts Degree.

College of the Desert will always be part of the Monica family. My wife Mary Ann worked at College of the Desert for 16 years. She also made a commitment to the California School Employees Association by serving as their President. Our sons, Matt Jr. and Joseph began college at College of the Desert and as a result are working in professional careers.

College of the Desert is part of the California Community College system. The system is by far the best opportunity for all students to succeed in higher education. I plan to uphold this objective for all students. My goal is to assist students and provide services that facilitate leading to their professional careers.

My endorsements have always been and continues to be the voters.
