Shall the City of Blythe increase its sales tax by one-half of one percent (0.5%) for a period of five years?
If approved by the voters, Measure "W" would increase the City's sales tax, currently set at 8%, by 1⁄2 of 1% for a period of five years. At this new rate, a transaction amounting to $100 would generate an additional $.50 cents in City revenue in addition to the $8 currently collected. Like the 8% sales tax currently being collected, the proposed increase would be imposed upon the sale of tangible personal property sold at retail within the City. All proceeds of the tax will be deposited into the City's General Fund to be used for all general municipal governmental purposes at the City's discretion, such as for public safety services, street and sidewalk repairs, upkeep and development of the City's parks, water delivery and treatment, and other local governmental functions. This measure provides that the 1⁄2 of 1% sales tax increase would expire in five years. Measure "W" was placed on the Ballot by the Blythe City Council. It will be adopted if it is approved by a majority of the voters voting on the measure. By: Christian Bettenhausen, City Attorney
