Skills and Assets that make me the Best CandidateBy Cathey RyderCandidate for Board Member; Huntington Beach Union High School District | |
This information is provided by the candidate |
Here is my background, my skills and the assets that qualify me for the role of a Governing Board Member.I spent 37 years as an educator in the Garden Grove Unified School District. I am very familiar with educational jargon and best practices. While there would be a learning curve in regards to the Huntington Beach Union High School District, I do know the field of education on many levels. I have taught special education, English ( all levels ), English Language Learners, been a mentor teacher, helped develop curriculum, served as the Title 1 Coordinator and the Director of Student Activities. I particularly know about high schools and how they work on a day to day basis. I know what it takes to engage today's students and ensure they are getting the best preparation for life after high school. I am an excellent communicator. My colleagues often joked that I could "sell ice to Eskimos". I can command the attention of 2000 students in the gym and lead an all day staff development workshop for one hundred of my peers. I am also an active listener and understand the value of hearing from all sides before making a decision. I am a very effective problem solver. After 17 years as a high school activities director, I have learned that you always need plan "b" and sometimes a plan "c". I am a self-discipined individual. I always complete any assigned task on time and under budget. I am a product of the California Public School System and come from a family of educators. My father was a high school teacher and counselor. My mother was a high school librarian . My siblings are all educators. My husband, sons and daughter -in-law are Huntington Beach High School alumni. I stay abreast of current educational trends as a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, an honor society of key women educators. I attend workshops , seminars and conferences on a regular basis. I have been actively engaging in social media and I am proud that I know how to tweet, blog, pin, post and upload to the various networking sites. In every organization that I join, I am always willing to serve on the executive board. I have been president, chairman, treasurer and secretary for many organizations over the years . All of my volunteer work in my community, both before and after my retirement, has been working with kids of all ages. While I have officially retired from teaching, I will never stop caring about and wanting to help kids. |
