Our Water Situation

By Stephanie G. Frisch

Candidate for Council Member; City of San Juan Capistrano

This information is provided by the candidate
Don't walk away from any current resource but look to untapped options such as desalination for our future.
The situation with our water supply, not only in San Juan Capistrano, but in all of Southern California, is dire. We live in a desert, our climate is changing, and we are in a severe drought. It only makes sense to take advantage of capturing groundwater before we lose it forever into the ocean. Everything seems to increase in price over the years; a resource as valuable as water increases in price too. Other than our Groundwater Recovery plant, we get our water from the Colorado River and the Bay Area Delta. We are not "first in line" to receive water from the other two sources, and as water sources deplete, our price to purchase that water grows and our access to it lessens. The Groundwater Recovery plant isn't without its issues, but I agree with the majority who I have interviewed that it is a good thing to have and something we don't dare walk away from. Meanwhile, due to our severe drought now in its third year (the worst it's been in 100 years) we may need to look at reducing the amount of water that we get from the GWRP to help maintain the water levels in the acquifor below us for the time being. I think we need to be looking at alternative sources of water, like desalination and more emphasis should be put on water conservation."
