My experience as a teacher at a comprehensive high school creates first-hand knowledge and experience of the needs of a school and the role that a school board member plays in ensuring opportunity and support for all students. Public education is in a period of transition as we work to ensure students have the skills needed for success in the 21st Century. It important to have School Board members with the direct experience necessary to lead during this time of change.

Inclusive and Responsible Budgets Directing Resources to the Classroom

Recent changes in state law require an inclusive budget development process through the creation of a Local Control Accountability Plan. I have direct experience developing an LCAP which will allow me to provide leadership on the Board of Trustees to improve inclusiveness during the next revision.

As the District emerges from the economic crisis it is essential that financial resources are directed back to the classrooms and campuses. Having served on a monthly district budget committee for six years, I have the knowledge necessary to take a fresh look at the priorities and determine how to make fiscally responsible choices that support students and their educational opportunities.

Improve Communication and Community Involvement

Timely and consistent communication is essential for a District that serves students from four elementary districts in several cities and two counties. Coordination of information and two-way communication will ensure smooth transitions from the elementary districts and on to post-secondary opportunities. My relationships with educational and civic leaders as well as members of the business community enable me to provide leadership on this issue.

Community involvement is key to the success of schools. Parents, community leaders, city officials and staff people, community organizations and teachers are all part of the team. Access to District staff and accessibility at School Board meetings is essential for progress. There are many wonderful organizations working to support student success. Effective communication will result in a coordination of effort.

College and Career Readiness through Career and Technical Education

21st Century skills require an intertwining of college and career ready pathways and educational opportunities, both academic and extracurricular. All too often college and career are viewed as separate paths which is a disservice to students and the community.

Career and technical education should be infused into all classrooms by supporting teachers as they improve students' skills in communication, creativity, collaboration and critical thinking. Resources and professional development need to be available and coordinated based on the needs of each school.

Additionally existing college and career pathways need to be supported while exploring the expansion of those programs including into the elementary districts. Furthermore, there is a need to research and implement new opportunities for students so that they remain competitive in the global marketplace.

It is important that all students have access to college and career programs and are supported in their efforts.
