Richard Tahvildaran-Jesswein will bring an important skill set to the SMMUSD Board of Education. From education activist as a teenager to tenured college professor and Associate Director of the Santa Monica College Public Policy Institute, Richard has dedicated his life to creating better educational opportunities for all families. Richard's commitment to educational excellence as a core American value was shaped by his experience growing up as a first generation Iranian-American during the Iran-Hostage Crisis. After earning a Ph.D. in American Politics and Difference Theory at Northern Arizona University, Richard began teaching at Santa Monica College. A tenured professor there for over fifteen years, he also served as the SMC Academic Senate President, leading the overhaul of the shared governance process to enhance communication, make decision-making at the college more inclusive, and create a learning experience that embraces SMC's diverse student body. In that capacity, Richard demonstrated that it is possible to protect opportunities for students and teachers even during tough economic times. Both professionally and as an activist, Richard has earned a reputation for collaboration and consensus building, innovation, and a commitment to fight for every child + from Santa Monica to Malibu. With his experience, and passion for public education, no one is better qualified than Richard to fill the open seat on the School Board. Richard and his wife Jennifer have lived in Santa Monica since 1999. They have a daughter and a son who attend our public schools. |
