Governing Board Member; Cerritos Community College District; Trustee Area 7

I'm Alan Burton of La Mirada and there are many reasons I'm running for Cerritos College Board.

As the father of two college age teens, I know how important affordable learning opportunities are for young people after high school. I have lived in La Mirada for two years and in Whittier for almost two decades. In that time, I have seen first hand what the hope of a post secondary degree has in realizing the dreams of dozens of neighbors and friends.

As a business owner, former law enforcement officer and military veteran, I see the options that a two-year associates degree can give adults changing careers or re-entering the workforce. I believe Cerritos Community College should serve as a pillar of opportunity to the community at large.

As a trustee, I will work tirelessly to make the College more affordable, more fiscally sound, and more independent of special interest groups. I will offer advice and constructive criticism to the President's office to assure fairness and that the community interests are considered and applied in decision making. I will protect rights of all campus employees by active monitoring and consideration of fair wage and benefit issues.

Working with my fellow trustees, I wish to create a model governing board that cares about the present and future of students, employees and all our great surrounding communities.
