Campaign Statement

By Mark A. Thomson

Candidate for Council Member; City of Martinez

From the Voters Guide
The time has come for informed, decisive action in our city government. Needed city initiatives have languished for too long in Martinez including the update of our 40 year old General Plan, creating a thriving Marina and shoreline, improving the business environment and completion of the sorely needed upgrades and deferred maintenance of our roads.

As a staunch advocate of the preservation and enhancement of Open Space within the city, I will continue to work tirelessly to ensure the Pine Meadows Golf Course retains its Open Space designation and see that Alhambra Hills is added to the City's inventory. There has not been a new city-owned park created in over twenty years despite the commensurate population increase.

Targeted economic development activities need to increase to attract new business, retain and expand existing business and reduce the vacancy rate of commercial properties in Martinez. The status quo has not been able to deliver what we need. Untapped opportunities exist in the downtown area and throughout the city.

I have lived and worked in Martinez for more than thirty years. My wife and I raised our two sons here. My long career at Shell Oil, culminating as the Manager of Information Technology, has honed my skills in working collaboratively with competing interests to produce effective, cost managed solutions.

I am deeply committed to building a great future for Martinez with the conviction that every voice in Martinez needs to be heard, not just a select few. I am respectfully asking for your vote.
