Dr. Kumar is a licensed clinical psychologist and is in a private practice He has 30 years' experience in the mental health. Currently, he owns and operates Independent and Assisted Living facilities. He is a founder of Therapeutic Residential Care Services, Inc., an agency providing independent and assisted living facilities to seniors, developmentally and mentally disabled populations in the Bay Area, Sacramento and Central Valley. He is also the founder and president of a non-profit mental health agency in California called South Asian Behavioral Health and Training Foundation (SABH CENTER) Inc. The SABH Center provides mental health, residential services and cultural sensitivity training to South Asians and mainstream communities. He was a co-founder of another mental health (The Hume Center) agency in June 1993. The Hume Center did become one of the largest (accredited by CAPIC & APPIC) training centers in the Bay Area. Dr. Kumar served as President of the Hume Center until August 31, 2004.

He taught in the U.S. at Rosebridge Graduate School of Integrative Psychology to graduate students. Dr. Kumar is devoted to research in the neurobehavioral and neuropsychological areas.

Dr. Kumar serves currently on the Q-MEASURE - Oversight Committee appointed by the City Council, City of Concord, California on April 5, 2011. He served on the Executive Committee of Interfaith Council of Contra Costa County for more than 12 years. He served as president of Federation of Indo-American Associations of Northern California (2006-5-2006). Since January 3, 2006 to July 2010, he served as a commissioner for the City of Concord on the Human Relations Commission, thus serving local community. He served as its Chair. He was a member of the Board of Directors of Monument Community Partnership (MCP) from 2003-2005. He was a trustee of the Board of Trustees of Ik Onkar Peace Foundation. It was Cooperation Circle of United Religions Initiative. As Trustee, he attended World Parliament of Religions in July 2004, in Barcelona, Spain to spread the message of universal love. He also served on the Advisory Council of India Community Center (http://www.ICC.org) from 2008-2010.

Dr. Kumar founded Annual Diversity Festival more than 11 years ago (in April 2004) in Todos Santos Park Plaza in downtown Concord, and 11th Annual Diversity Festival was held on May 3, 2014 at the same venue. The festival was envisioned with collaboration of Interfaith Council of Contra Costa County to build bridges in different ethnic communities and to create social and cultural harmony. He participated in the free community health fairs organized by various local charitable organizations such as the Federation of Indo-American Associations (FIA) and the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPIO). He served as the Chairperson of the Allied Health Professionals' chapter in 2010 and also from 1994 to 1995. Dr. Kumar also chaired a committee on cross-cultural issues in neuropsychology of Northern California Neuropsychological Forum (NCNF) from 1995 to 1997 and currently he is serving as a member-at large on the Board of Directors of NCNF.

Dr. Kumar has received various honors for his professional and social work by various organizations including Making a Difference Award by Interfaith Council of Contra Costa County in November 2013; on August 15, 2002, with Certificate of Recognition by the Senate of State of California for his services to the welfare of the citizens of California. He was also honored with HIND RATTAN (Jewel of India) AWARD in 1996 by The Non-Resident-Indians Welfare Society of India for his achievements and contributions to the well being of the Indo-American community as well as to the mainstream society in the United States. Dr. Kumar is running for Concord City Council for Nov. 4, 2014.
