I am Director of Community and Government Relations at Saint Mary's College, having earned my AA Degree in the 1980's from Diablo Valley College, later graduating from the University of California, Davis. Being the first person in my family to graduate from college, I understand the hurdles first generation students experience. I am a third generation resident, with two sons in college, my wife, Eileen Roberts-Farley is a 6th grade teacher at Pine Hollow Middle school in Concord. I served two terms on the Martinez City Council, working in cooperation with the 4 other council members, we balanced eight municipal budgets. Additionally I served on the board of directors of the County Connection bus agency, again working as a team, I balanced seven public budgets. In total these budgets amounted to over hundreds of millions of dollars over eight years. Each budget balanced. Electing leaders experienced in cooperating together in effectively managing budgets is imperative. I have that experience working as a team member serving the public's needs. I'm proudly endorsed by these elected officials who know how to serve the public needs: Congressmen George Miller and Mike Thompson, Senator Mark DeSaulnier, District Attorney Mark Peterson, Sheriff David Livingston, Supervisor Federal Glover and the Mayors of Concord, Martinez and Pittsburg and the vice mayor of Pleasant Hill. I also have the support of Public Employees Local One, The United Fire Firefighters of Contra Costa County, The Martinez Police Officers Association, The Contra Costa Central Labor Council, and The Building Trades Council of Contra Costa. And countless teachers, students, current and former elected officials and neighbors. As a person who benefited from our public higher education school system, I believe quality affordable education should be available to all our students. Sadly, because of budget cuts and insufficient course offerings, half of the students enrolled in our community colleges take more than four years to graduate. This is unacceptable. The students and families of Contra Costa deserve better. Voters narrowly passed a $450 million bond measure in June, doubling our property tax fees to pay for community college improvements. This money must be spent prudently and wisely. That's why I have spoken to leaders in Pleasant Hill and Concord on partnership opportunities to maximize the impact of these funds and improve access to higher education for our students. Contra Costa Community College District needs more out-of-the-box thinkers to improve the community college experience and make it affordable for all students + without raising additional taxes or fees. I will be that type of leader I have spent a lifetime in service to this community; I would like the opportunity to be that kind of leader representing you on the Contra Costa Community College District. Your support would mean a great deal to me. Thank you. Tim Farley 228-8050 (Home) |
