My Vision of Progress... And Making it Happen

As a leader on the City Council, I can tell you that my emphasis has been on getting things done: having a plan for change, bringing resources to the table, and paying attention to the "ripple effect of physical change."

As a person who has lived in Chicago, I appreciate and admire the city's ability to "will" itself to become one of the best cities in the country. In my opinion, it is a will that comes from a clear vision, strong leadership, and civic pride.

Now, as a resident and leader of the city of Martinez, I often hear about our "potential" and, just as often, the questions about what it will take for Martinez to "turn the corner." Certainly Martinez is not San Francisco or Chicago, nor do we want to be. But does Martinez have what it takes to transform our potential into progress, our aspirations into achievements? Do we have the will to become one of the best cities in the Bay Area, or are we content with being a city of "what could be" (or even worse, "what was")?

If civic pride is a component of success, we are well on our way in Martinez-- despite our physical and economic challenges. This is a community steeped in history that takes the preservation of its physical and social lineage very seriously. In fact, people (like myself) whose families haven't lived here for generations are some times viewed as interlopers with suspicious intentions of "radical transformation." But even we newcomers cherish Martinez's history and are proud of preserving its unique appeal.

And there is certainly no shortage of clear vision for Martinez's future. I picture a more vibrant downtown infused with homes and businesses of distinction and charm, a refurbished and improved marina, new restaurants over-looking the Carquinez Straits, streets that are paved and safe, parks that are well-maintained and expanded, median strips that beautify and welcome, improved pool and library facilities, cultural attractions that enrich and enthrall...I think it is safe to say that the community can picture this as well.

So what about the last critical element of success--strong leadership that puts an emphasis on getting things done?

One could argue that Martinez's progress is stymied by a lack of resources, in many instances. It's hard for leadership to move the proverbial ship forward when our resources are devoted largely to "keeping the boat afloat." However, the majority of the current Council is pro-redevelopment and pro-resources to help make our vision a reality. We can't simply dream of a difference --we have to invest in making the dream a reality!

Physical change is paved roads, improved streetscapes, underground utilities, promotional banners, buildings that preserve our historic character, brick entry monuments, skateboard and bike parks, railroad quiet zones, flood control projects, etc...

With this kind of leadership on the Council, and with a civic culture that expects good results, we can and we will be the Martinez we want to be.
