The Mayor Is the Superintendent of the CityBy Ken HoustonCandidate for Mayor; City of Oakland | |
This information is provided by the candidate |
The Mayor should oversee the budget the same way as a superintendent runs a construction projectSitting on the Budget Committee has taught me many facets of the Oakland's budget structure, and I have more to learn. However, one of the strong suits of my team and I is budgeting. As an entrepreneur I have managed dollars to hundreds to thousands to millions of dollars -- there is no difference--just a few more zeros. You have to manage the money within the budget you have. As a superintendent on construction projects, I have overseen scopes, deadlines, and budgets on small, medium, large and extra-large projects; and the process of overseeing the City's budget is the same. You have to be on budget or under budget to have a successful project or a successful city. I have always been on or under budget on my projects, and the current city budgeters have not. When it comes to managing a budget on a project, I manage it well. Oakland as a project that needs to be managed. The mayor of Oakland is the superintendent, and as superintendent, I always complete my projects on time and on or under budget. I will do the same for Oakland and then return the key to the People, just as I turnkey all of my construction projects. |
