A review of my involvement with equity issues in CV Unified.
When my children were in Middle and High school, I helped organize and joined the Ethnic and Cultural Awareness Committee and continued to work with that committee as long as it functioned. From it grew a district equity plan. It began in earnest 10 years ago, involved professional development with the administrative staff and board of education, receded during some cabinet level and superintendent changes, and is now fully in gear, re-committed to by the board and the superintendent. Professional development began with teachers last school year. Dr. Derrick Smith has had at least 5 sessions with all administrators and 2 sessions with the Board of Education. We are all on the same page, moving ahead and, with the changes bought by the Local Control Accountability Plan, we are determined to meet the needs of all of our students and close the achievement gap,. The district motto STUDENT SUCCESS, NOTHING LESS is a reflection of our commitment to the equity plan. Not just racial, but also economic, gender and language.
