I have consistently voted against lay-offs, as well as the and elimination of positions and programs which I felt were detrimental to the educational success of our children.
As a former member of the Board of Education for the NHUSD, I often was the sole "No" vote when it came to laying off school personnel, and the elimination of key positions and programs, whose elimination I believed was detrimental to our goal of student success.
Our arts and library programs went from outstanding to almost non-existent. Many paraprofessionals, who I see as part of the foundation for student success were eliminated. There were
cutbacks in our maintenance department such that some our facilities have suffered to the point that we need to pass Measure M, in order to repair, or replace the facilities. Look
at the athletic field at JLHS. It went from simply the best, to one of the worst.Revenue has been lost because events that were once held there have been moved to other school sites, in other school districts.
I voted against the closure of Barnard-White Middle School because I thought it was not fair to have a segment of our student population have to find a way to one of our remaining Middle Schools the best way they could. The most unfair outcome of the closure of this public school, was providing space for PRIVATE school children at the expense of our PUBLIC school kids. I believe in the public school system, and do not believe that the needs of children who attend private schools should ever be more important than those of the children who attend our public school system.
Every children in this district deserves the same resources and opportunity for educational success.
